In 2013 I lived in Zambia, where I worked as a volunteer in a group of five. We spent most of our days in Twafwane, a community in the Copperbelt region of the country, waterproofing the homes for rainy season and teaching the kids in preschool in the mornings. Most afternoons and evenings we worked with the street boys in Kawama Boys Shelter and on the streets of Kitwe. Zambia has a serious and growing problem with the vast amount of children on the street. A lot of these kids end up there because conditions at home are unbearable for them, be it down to abuse, poverty or the death of both parents, and life on the streets is the only option, as I saw myself on the streets of Ndola, Kitwe and Lusaka especially. Although it was not one of the main focuses of our projects we put aside some time to volunteer in St.Anthony’s Orphanage, Ndola which is about an hour away from Kitwe. In the orphanage there are 88 orphaned children and babies to 8 staff. During my time in Africa I filmed a short movie to depict the true Zambian experience as a volunteer, captured on a Nikon d90.
