From 1849 to 1874, over 100,000 Chinese contract labors, called “coolies,” settled in Peru. Fabiana Chiu-Rinaldi has been researching her family connections to these early workers sent to the Americas. Her great grandfather voyaged from Nam Hoi, China to Peru and later Fabiana, her sisters and parents re-migrated to the U.S. Using gathered oral histories, family records and public sources, Fabiana Chiu-Rinaldi traces the story of her family’s long migration. She shares her findings, networks, experience, resources and tips on this under-explored sector in Chinese genealogy.
